Sedation dentistry with nitrous in Austin, TX

What is
nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a safe way to make you feel calm and comfortable during your dental procedure. Dr. Nguyen will place a mask over your nose and mouth that will allow you to inhale nitrous oxide and oxygen. The effects of nitrous subside relatively quickly after the mask is removed.

The treatment process

When we use nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is not intended to put you to sleep. Instead, it is simply intended to help you relax and feel comfortable with the procedure. Nitrous oxide is used to help individuals with:

  • Dental anxiety
  • Complex extractions
  • Root canal therapy
  • Mildly apprehensive patient
  • The frightened child
  • To control gagging

Yes! In fact, nitrous is the best way to get children to relax during their dental procedures. If this sounds like the right option for your child,  you should speak with Dr. Nguyen before your appointment.

Yes. Nitrous oxide works quickly, doesn’t put you fully asleep, and is easy to reverse.

While nitrous oxide is safe, it is not without its possible side effects, which may include:

  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

For this reason, nitrous oxide is not always the right choice for everyone. If you are going to need nitrous oxide, speak with Dr. Nguyen about it before your appointment.

After nitrous is removed, you will need oxygen for at least 5 minutes to purge your respiratory system of any remaining gas. After you go home, you should avoid large meals for a few hours.

Dr. Nguyen will discuss when you will be able to drive again after your procedure.
